Created in France by two rival sports newspapers, the first official Tour de France was held in 1903 and began as only a five stage race. While the route changes each year, the format of the race stays the same and now consists of 21 stages covering both flat and mountainous terrain…
The Tour de France has long been regarded as one of the most demanding endurance events in sporting history. It covers approximately 3,500 kilometres with the appearance of time trials, the passage through breathtaking mountains of the Pyrenees and the Alps and a spectacular ending in France’s capital city.
It is now the third most watched sports event in the world after the FIFA World Cup and summer Olympic Games. Each year the race is broadcast over 188 countries attracting a worldwide television audience of 3.5 billion people and there are an astonishing 12 million spectators along the route in a typical year’s race!
Winner highlights: ? French cyclist Maurice Garin was the first gentleman to win the Tour de France back in 1903. Bernard Hinault has won the most races, first in 1978 then again in 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1985! Bradley Wiggins was the first British rider to win the Tour de France in 2012 followed by a second British winner, Chris Froome, in 2013.
This year the 103rd Tour de France will visit three neighbouring countries: Spain, Andorra and Switzerland and cyclists will pass through well-known ski and summer holiday resorts. The infamous Mont Blanc will offer a stunning backdrop to final mountain stages in Megève, Saint-Gervais-Mont Blanc and Morzine before the final showdown which is always on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
